Type “SEO company Johannesburg” into Google and open the first five results. Every one of them has a page about Johannesburg. Not one of them shows a price. They link to a rates page, or ask you to request a quote, or say it depends.
It does depend. But a buyer in Sandton comparing three agencies on a Tuesday afternoon does not have time for three discovery calls to find out whether the number is R5,000 or R50,000. This article gives the numbers, what each band buys, and the questions that separate a fair quote from an expensive one.
The Johannesburg range
The most useful public figure comes from MO Agency’s own survey of the Johannesburg market, published in June 2026: retainers run from roughly R8,000 to R25,000 a month, with entry-level local SEO starting lower and enterprise work going higher. That matches what we see in audits of Joburg businesses that have worked with local agencies before. The invoices cluster around three bands.
R3,000 to R8,000 a month: local and single-location. A Google Business Profile properly set up and kept alive, technical fixes to the site, a small set of keywords, monthly reporting. For a dentist in Rosebank or a plumber covering Fourways this is often all that is needed, because the competition for a suburb-plus-service search is thinner than the city-wide number suggests.
R8,000 to R15,000 a month: competitive local and B2B. Everything above plus pages built for each suburb and service, content published monthly, and link outreach to South African sites. This is the band for attorneys, accountants, clinics, logistics firms and software companies competing across Gauteng.
R15,000 to R25,000 and up: multi-location and national. A dedicated strategist, digital PR, several locations or countries, and the volume of content a mature market demands. Banks, insurers, property groups and mining services suppliers sit here.
What the price does not tell you
Two agencies can charge R10,000 and deliver completely different things. The difference is rarely in the service list, which reads the same everywhere. It is in four questions.
Did they research before they quoted? A quote that arrives before anyone has looked at what your buyers search, who ranks for it and where the gaps are is a package, not a strategy. Ask what they found. If the answer is a slide about SEO in general, the research has not happened.
Is the price on the page? It sounds trivial. It is a test of how the agency treats its own buyers, which is how it will treat yours. The firms ranking for SEO in Johannesburg today hide their rates, and most of their clients’ sites hide theirs too, which is one of the three gaps we found in the Joburg market.
What are they reporting? Rankings and traffic are easy to show and easy to inflate. Enquiries, calls and customers are what you pay for. Ask to see a sample monthly report before signing.
What happens if you leave? Twelve-month contracts are common in South Africa. They protect the agency, not you. Month to month with a money-back period is rarer and tells you the agency expects to be judged on results.
Our prices, since we are asking everyone else to publish theirs
SEOGidi’s plans in rand: Starter R3,300, Pro R8,200, Elite R16,500 a month, billed in dollars at the current rate, with no contract and a 30-day money-back guarantee. They sit below the Johannesburg average because we work remotely with South African clients and carry no Sandton office; the research and the pages are the same.
The full breakdown is on our SEO company in Johannesburg page, and the detail of what each plan contains is on the packages page. We are a Nigerian company, founded in Lagos, that works across Africa; if that matters to you, say so on the call and we will show you the South African work first.
