SEO is one of the few digital skills with a clear ladder and salaries you can look up. These are the ranges Google shows for SEO specialist roles in its job listings, drawn from ZipRecruiter, Indeed and Glassdoor.

  1. SEO specialist or analyst

    Keyword research, on-page fixes, content briefs, reporting. The role most graduates start in, in-house, at an agency or freelance.

  2. SEO or growth manager

    Owns the strategy and the numbers for a brand or a book of clients. Manages writers, developers and budgets.

  3. Head of growth or digital marketing

    Runs search alongside paid, social and email, and reports to the founder or the board on customers won.

  4. Consultant or agency owner
